The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is often called the "100 Deadly Days of Summer". With school out, warmer weather, and more people traveling for holidays, our roads become busier and, unfortunately, more dangerous. This time of year sees a significant increase in traffic incidents and fatalities, particularly involving inexperienced drivers.

In response to the 100 Deadly Days of Summer, the "100 Safest Days of Summer" initiative was created. This movement brings together organizations and communities to promote safe driving habits and reduce preventable crashes. It’s about turning a risky reality into a safer future for everyone on the road.

A collective effort for safer roads

LifeSafer® is proud to be part of the 100 Safest Days of Summer initiative, alongside the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), the Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition, United We Go DC, Youth of Virginia Speak Out (YOVASO), and more, in our shared commitment to road safety.

This effort aims to improve road conditions for all types of road users. A large portion of crashes and fatalities occur during these summer months, with one primary cause standing out: speeding.

Speed limits aren't arbitrary; they are set based on crucial data, including crash history, pedestrian activity, and safe stopping distances. The faster you drive, the less time you have to react to unexpected hazards, and the more severe the outcome of a crash will be.

This danger is amplified during holiday weekends, like Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day, when road congestion peaks. Even the back-to-school season brings risks, as school zones become vulnerable to unpredictable traffic patterns.

How you can make a difference

Creating safer roads is a responsibility we all share. Every individual action contributes to a larger culture of safety. Here are some ideas and how to get started from the 100 Safest Days of Summer campaign on how to help this cause:

In your community

  • Use your voice: Post about safe driving on social media to raise awareness among friends and followers.
  • Start a campaign: Organize a safe driving campaign across local schools and in the community.
  • Host discussions: Arrange talks and panels with safety experts to educate others.
  • Speak up: If you see someone practicing risky driving behaviors, don’t be afraid to say something. Your intervention could prevent a tragedy.

At home

  • Start the conversation: Use the resources provided on the 100 Safest Days of Summer website to have meaningful discussions about safe driving with new drivers, family, and friends.
  • Instill safe habits with ISA: Installing a LifeSafer Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA)™ device is a proactive step toward building safe driving habits. Our technology offers:
    • Active speed control to prevent speeding before it happens.
    • Real-time alerts to keep drivers informed and aware.
    • New driver program resources to support inexperienced drivers on their journey to becoming responsible and confident behind the wheel.

Building a safer future together

Traffic-related fatalities can be prevented. By combining the dedicated work of safety organizations, the active involvement of communities, and the use of technology like LifeSafer ISA™ to improve driving safety, we can continue to move toward a future with fewer crashes and safer roads for all.
